Bistro Bulgaria - Sunday Roast

Image
With a dull, wet Sunday being forecast, I along with some friends, decided to book in and try the Sunday Roast at Bistro Bulgaria (on Camposol, Sector B) and we were not disappointed.  I am not one for Sunday lunches in the summer but just every now and again, particularly on a dull wet day, there is something very satisfying about a lovely roast dinner you've not had to cook.  Now where do I start with our experience of this?  Well first and foremost.... Yanka, what a formidable, powerhouse of a lady! With her friendly, no nonsense approach she will bend over backwards to ensure you have a wonderful meal and, more than that, a fantastic experience in her restaurant.  This is one of those restuarants we have used on Camposol a lot, mostly for Birthdays or special celebrations, and their main menu is incredible and some of the more traditional Bulgarian dishes are beautiful! Yanka and her team are only too happy to explain the menu and offer recommendations - the food truly is to

Restaurant Piccolo - A local Gem

Image
During my time living in Camposol, I have to say this is the restaurant I think has come on so much and is now a real challenger for a top spot on my personal favourites.  Located on the commercial centre on B, next door to Branded Bedding Shop and a couple of doors down from Quick Save Supermarket, Restaurant Piccolo not only has a bright, clean and modern styled inside resturant but also a covered outside space - that is usable all year round and heated in the winter.  With a very diverse menu of starters, main courses, pizzas, pastas, childrens meals and desserts there really is something for everyone and the standard and presentation of their food really is top notch! In addition to their standard menu they also offer a Menu Del Dia for €12.50 and an early bird set menu for €17.90, which is served between 6-7:45pm. Both of these menus include a starter, main course, dessert or coffee and soft drink, beer or wine.

'Aunt Lilibet' - Royal Ties

Image
After the sad and sudden death of Elizabeth II, it made me realise how little I know about the Spanish royal family and their connections with our royal family.  Living here in Spain, I decided it was probably something I should learn a little more about and in researching found some interesting little facts I thought I would share.  The current royal family consists of King Filipe, Queen Letizia and their 2 daughters.  Filipe was proclaimed King on June 19th 2014, after the abdication of his father Juan Carlos. Juan Carlos handed power to his son after almost a 40 year reign.  Due to corruption investigations (and other controversial events) Juan Carlos traveled to the UAE in 2020, where he has been living ever since despite denying any wrongdoings. It is believed he recently traveled back to Spain for the first time to spend some private time with his family.  With the above in mind, I was intrigued to dig a little deeper and understand the relations between the Spanish royal famil

Street Art in Mazarrón

Image
I don't know about you but I am by no means a connoisseur of art but I do have an appreciation of beautiful things, artistic talent and particularly anything creative that tells a local story.    Here in Mazarrón we seem to be surrounded by the latter and the stories behind some of the street art here really intrigue and touch me.  Here are some examples you might find interesting… Located opposite the town hall is a beautiful piece of street art, which as I understand it was created as a dedication and thanks for all our healthcare professionals that lead the way and looked after us all, and continue to do so, through the Covid 19 pandemic.  The painting on the wall, of what looks like a derelict building, is this incredibly beautiful, colourful image of a nurse in a mascarilla, with a white rose. Next to it is an inscription which translates to a thank you to all healthcare professionals. The second image I have chosen is a short walk down from the Covid tribute and is located

ITV Station - the drive thru without a Big Mac

Image
So once a year my poor little car has to go in for it's ITV inspection, which is a very different experience to a UK MOT and so I thought I would share my experience for anyone who has not yet had to do it... I use our local ITV testing station in Mazarrón and I have to say on the two occasions I have done so, I have found them to be super helpful and it to be a relatively stress free experience - although the first time I was somewhat nervous as to what to expect.  On arrival I park up and take my log book and personal identification papers into the office. The lady there is super helpful and took all my documents from me and showed me exactly what she needed. She processed the necessary paperwork on the computer, handed me my paperwork back and I made a payment of 45€. Each car is different in cost but she will be able to explain the tariff for your vehicle. I paid by card, got my receipt and she told me which lane to join. I did try to speak with her in my very best Spanish (w

Yaho - Menú Diario

Image
Yaho, is an Asian fusion restaurant situated in El Puerto de Mazarrón. Located on Av, Dr Meca, just after Burger King and next door to Sabadell Bank, you can hardly miss Yaho when driving into the port from Mazarrón Town. With a modern, luxurious, dark purple interior the restaurant itself offers a calm, relaxed and quirky environment to enjoy their Asian infusions and the covered in outside terrace offers a great outside dining experience all year round.  This is one of my favourite places to go for a late lunch, or should I say breakfast, lunch and dinner as their Menú Diario is enough to keep you going all day! There are plenty of choices for each course but typically I always start with their house salad and oh my days, that dressing! The presentation is always great and the salad is fresh and tasty.  Next course is the sushi, which is always fresh and presented beautifully also and if sushi is your thing they have a wider range to choose from on their a la carte menu.   For the ma

Markets of Mazarrón & Surrounding Areas

Image
There is nothing I love more than the hustle and bustle of a busy Spanish market and this was one of the things I missed most during the Covid restrictions.  Although it has taken a long while to get them all back up and running, we now have a great selection of markets here on our doorstep in Mazarrón - below is a little about each of the markets locally, including their locations and the day they are on.... Camposol Market  is located on Sector A of Camposol, in the large car park opposite the Bodega. It takes place early on Thursday morning and lasts until around lunch time. There are usually somewhere between about a dozen and 20 stalls, although this seems to be building back up again now. The stalls consist of fruit & veg, clothes, handbags, jewellery, sunglasses, belts, garden lighting, fresh flowers, golfing equipment and generally the things you would expect to find on a small to midsize market. Personally for me the best thing about it is the Fruit & Veg, as it last
