Emergencies - 112 & AlertCops

I've seen a couple of posts recently where people are asking what to do and who to call in an emergency here is Spain. Whilst those of us that live here generally know of the services available to us and the numbers to call, there will be newbies and holiday makers who aren't sure from time to time and so I thought I would post a few handy bits of info…

Call 112 and ask for an English speaking operator, they are really good and will be able to accommodate this. 112 is the equivalent of our 999 in the UK and the operator will route the correct emergency services depending on your situation.

The other option, which not so many people are aware of is a mobile phone/tablet app called AlertCops.

You can download AlertCops from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store and other android app stores.

Once downloaded the content is in English and this app can be used both for emergencies, as well as lower level communications you may need with the Policia.

You can follow the prompts to set up the app and this will enable the police to respond and even find you in an extreme emergency, if you give permissions.

Within the app there is both a call and chat function, which can be done in English and there are several options to report certain situations through an automated system. The automated templates are very easy to follow and help you provide the policia the information they will likely require.

There is also a function which allows you to set up a guardian contact or contacts, up to 5. The contacts will then be able to track your whereabouts through the app with your permission. Handy if you ever breakdown somewhere you aren't familiar with or if you find yourself in a particularly dangerous situation away from home. This is triggered by an SOS button, which you can download to your home screen and will automatically send your location to your guardian/s and a 10 second sound recording, so they can judge the severity of your situation.

Also, one other resource we have at our finger tips (on Camposol) is that of Fast, a dedicated team of medical first responders. Check out their facebook page for more information. For anyone who can offer up some of their time Fast are always on the look out to recruit and train new responders - Look out for the FAST 'Nurses' on Camposol and give them a wave and donate to this great cause, if you can.

I hope this information is useful to bear in mind and that the majority of us never need to use it.
