Aledo - The Castillo on the hill

Aledo is a beautiful town located 30 minutes from Camposol, just on the other side of Totana and on the southern slope of the Sierra Espuña.

With a population of 893 inhabitants Aledo has a very traditional Spanish feel and emits a magical feeling of community.

As you drive up to the town through it's narrow, windy streets you get a sense of the history, tradition and community that Aledo has in abundance and as you reach the top, the view gives a glimpse of the true power of such a little town up high in the mountains.

On making it to the top of the village we were greeted by the imposing entrance to the church of Santa Maria La Real. The church was built on the location of a former Muslim mosque and is now a christian chapel.

Santa Maria is the patron of Aledo and within the church there are some extremely important sculptures, including the figure of Santa Maria La Real, as well as piece by the master of Baroque sculpture Fransisco Salzillo.

Beyond the church is the Torre Del Homenaje, a tower which looks out over the Murcian region and local grape and olive crops. Not only is the tower part of the Castle of Aledo but it also the emblem of the municipality.

Built in the 11th century, the castle encloses the village of Aledo and it's remarkable tower demonstrates the power and defense of the territory.

Next to the tower you will find La Picota, the medieval pillory and a symbol of a brutal feudal system.  This is the only remaining pillory in the region of Murcia but a stark reminder of the punishment for even the most minor misdemeanour.

By turning around from either the Torre del Homenaje or the Church of Santa Maria La Real, you can see the La Puerta de las Tradiciones. The door is the creation of modern artist Antonio Labaña Serrano from Algezar and incorporates the most important traditions of the town. A bronze door, guarded by two marble columns, the door is split mainly into 4 parts with each collecting traditions and culture - Keep your eye out for the hidden lock within the door!

As well as the bucket loads of history and archaeological wonders Aledo has to offer, there are some incredible walks, scenery, wildlife and exquisite examples of a tradional Spanish lifestyle and culture to be enjoyed.

It is well worth the trip to Aledo just for the views, but there really is so much more to the enchanting little place on the hill.

Un Saludo,
