Menú del Día

Menú del Día, or menu of the day in English, is traditionally a large, economic meal eaten at lunch time and consists of multiple courses.

Most places traditionally serve their Menú del Día between around 2 & 4 but this can vary depending on the restaurant you visit. The menu generally changes daily, depending on what local produce is available and what's in season.

Typically this has been considered a poor man or woman's meal, due to it's economic value but actually because of the fresh local produce used, these menus are often of good quality and nutritional balance.

Most usually they are around three of four courses and often include a small beer or wine and bread with Alioli, a traditional Spanish garlic sauce or dip.

We are extremely lucky here in Mazarron to have such a vast array of places offering Menú del Dia and at good quality.  Walking around the marina and along the paseo, in El Puerto de Mazarrón, after work the other evening I spotted no less than 12 Menú del Día boards all within 5 minutes walk from one another.

Typically the menus, consist of the following and range in price between 10 & 15€
  • Bread and Alioli
  • Salad or Soup
  • Starter
  • Main Meal
  • Dessert or Coffee
  • Small wine or beer
The chalk board menus are a common and convenient way for the restaurants to show off their offerings and you soon become used to checking them out, almost subconsciously, whilst mooching around.

I've taken advantage of these great offers many times and I have to say a few of my favourites in the Port include, Cervecería La Caleta, Palenque Brasas and Alhambra.

So, next time you fancy something filling, good value and with a view have a wonder and check out the blackboards - there is so much to choose from you'll be overwhelmed!

Un Saludo
